What do you know about that?

Our Revolutionary-Era (est. 1775) Bellows

Did you know that our restaurant is filled with various antiques from the 1700's and 1800’s? These antiques were collected over the years from around the world. These treasures add to our unique décor in the restaurant and each one has a story to tell. We feel that the attention to detail at Ruby Red’s makes a difference and adds to the experience for our guests.

One of our oldest items at Ruby Red’s is a Revolutionary Era bellows held behind our bar in our saloon dining room. It’s estimated to have been in use around 1775 in Massachusetts in a blacksmiths shop that repaired and assembled muskets for patriots fighting in the American revolutionary war. The colonies couldn’t compete in musket manufacturing on the same scale as the Europeans. Instead, they relied on capturing enemy weapons, importing arms from Europe (including from France and the Netherlands), and utilizing privately owned firearms, many of which had mixed origins. After the French and Indian War, over 4,500 British and Dutch muskets remained in the hands of Massachusetts provincials. Smaller bellows like this one were used by blacksmiths to provide a focused and controlled blast of air to their forge fires for delicate work. We love the history showcased in Ruby Red’s.

Next time you visit us, look around and see if you can find things that you may not have noticed before. Perhaps you’ll see a Texas or Revolutionary flag. Maybe you’ll discover that each of our saloon dining tables were handmade by our founder Steve Williamson and include brass information plaques with interesting facts. You may see a beautiful crystal chandelier hung below a cowboy bed. Maybe you’ll wonder if that chandelier can be seen in a movie. Maybe that movie was about the walking dead and maybe that chandelier can be seen in that movie in the mansion of a famous groundhog comedian. Hmmm, do you know the name of the movie?

“So grateful Ruby Red’s is here. My second time sitting down but my husband is here regularly. We've been missing good BBQ in La Habra and Ruby Red’s is the perfect fit. Had PTO tonight and dined in. They've made a lot of improvements, and I was really happy to see the house was full! Excellent service from Britian and Kevin as usual and so grateful for the care and hospitality. Also, THE BEEF RIBS ARE THE BEST! Thank you Ruby Red’s!”

MENU HIGHLIGHT

Imagine, for a moment, the simple collard green leaf. Not a vibrant, manicured salad green, but something more weathered, bearing the whispers of time and the rich earth from which it hails.

This isn't just a vegetable; it's a living piece of history, stretching back to prehistoric times in the Mediterranean. It voyaged across oceans with the African diaspora, taking root in the American South, becoming a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the ingenuity of a people who turned humble greens into a soul food staple.

At Ruby Red’s BBQ, the collard greens honor that legacy. Slowly simmered with our prime smoked meats, they embody the rich traditions and deep flavors of Southern cooking. More than just a side, they're a connection to the past, a celebration of heritage, and a delicious, nourishing dish that we are proud to offer. This month, our Club Members can experience Steve’s original recipe Collard Greens for free. If you’re not a club member of Ruby Red’s yet, it’s easy to sign up at no cost or obligation.
